There are only a couple of Cook Islands surfing breaks found around a couple of passages on the fringing reef of the main island of Rarotonga.

The most reliable surfing break is at Avana on the east coast where a small passage opens up and is easily accessible from shore. The break is quite short and you will need patience in selecting waves. The surf is not that reliable nor challenging and it breaks over the reef making it quite dangerous for beginners. The locals have fun here but passionate surfers will find it all rather tame. Opposite the passage is a smaller break which is popular for boogie boarders.

If the surf isn't up at Avana, try Rutaki Passage on the south coast or off Club Raro on the north coast, both also accessible from the shore. You will need to bring your own board as there are no surf shops on Rarotonga. If you're into surfing, call in at Nikki's Surf Shop on the east end of Avarua Town near Paradise Inn. Nikki is the local surf king and will keep you informed about the local waves. He also has a small shop where you buy second hand boards and sell them back to him (if not wrecked) on your departure.
